about the content
The photo series – shot mainly with lay models – is designed as a traveling exhibition, and includes some works of aesthetic erotic photography in the form of photo compositions and colour effect works together with some extraordinary portrait works in black and white technique.
The selection of models, as well as the composition of the series, follow the motto of “The world in Vienna, cosmopolitan, multicultural life in Vienna”.
This motto is reflected in the title photo of the exhibition: “The world in Vienna” shows the face of a woman, assembled from the portraits of the models from the five continents. Its composition and colouring are modeled on the Olympic symbol.
The models come from all five continents of this/our Earth and, with one exception, work and live in Vienna.
The photo series contributes to the cosmopolitan and tolerant co-existence of nationalities in Vienna, in times when concepts like xenophobia and intolerance are still widespread.
Vienna, May 2001

"ALMA - A PHOTOSHOW"
(group exhibition)
dates
Café Stein / Stein´s Diner
flashlight on austrian photography / an initiative to support austrian photography
1090 Wien, Währinger Str. 6-8
about the content
"ALMA - A PHOTOSHOW" presents the photographic confrontation with the polydrama "ALMA - a SHOW BIZ ans Ende" by Joshua Sobol and Paulus Manker.
This project was realised together with the photographer MANFRED KLIMEK and the photo-artist LUKAS MAXIMILIAN HÜLLER in cooperation with "ALMA - A VENEZIA" by PAULUS MANKER.
"Alma" is a polydrama and a theatrical journey, following the steps of ALMA MAHLERGROPIUSKOKOSCHKAWERFEL, a woman who was travelling during the first half of the 20th century experiencing passionate relationships with and separations from men who considerably enriched the heritage of mankind.
It is an interactive play which showed the different sequences of Alma Mahler-Werfel's life simultaneously in all rooms of the sanatorium Purkersdorf, near Vienna, during the summer months of the years 1996 to 2001.
"Alma" is one of the most extraordinary and successful Austrian theatre productions ever to have taken place in Austria (author JOSHUA SOBOL, director PAULUS MANKER) and is going to be performed as "ALMA-A VENEZIA" in August and September 2002 in Venice, where Alma possessed a residence,
The audience is invited to decide on its own about its positioning to and distance from the actors, to change scenery and perspective during the performance, and to act or react like a camera, with each visitor writing, by doing so, his own, very individual play.
Inspired by MANKER's production the three photographers and photo-artists have taken over his principle and recorded and photographed the play both in total and close-up:
MANFRED KLIMEK
as an observer of the actors during auditions and performances over several years, presents brilliant portraits and character studies of the actors as well as vivid and vibrating photos of the scenery.
LUKAS MAXIMILIAN HÜLLER
presents a 2000 degree panorama, which was taken four hours continuously during the performance of the play, and shows a photographic time-travel through Manker's production.
MANFRED FABIAN PICHLBAUER
presents the architectural historical wrapping of "Alma", the art nouveau building of Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte, by using photo compositions. For his work, Pichlbauer returned to the sanatorium one year after "ALMA" was presented in Purkersdorf, and put the focus on the building as it was built almost 100 years ago, in the context of present changes and new adaptations
press comments
"..."Alma" goes to Venezia....to the Viennese population, which is now without "Alma", remains the exhibition "Alma-a photoshow" to remember - and, at the same time, to enjoy finest photo art..."

about the contents
Human moods and emotions are expressed in various ways,… facial expression, posture, body-language or the spoken word, etc. give us an insight into human psyche.
At least as numerous are the possibilities to take an influence on human moods and emotions,… music, tastes, events, literature or colours, etc. provoke various human moods and cause different emotional movements.
The presented photo series is devoted to this field of tension - on the one hand, the visualization of existing moods and emotions, on the other the provocation of moods and emotions by means of different photographic techniques (black and white, colour, photo-graphics, colour effects, solarization, photo compositions, etc.).
In the focus of the lens there are women of different nationalities (and colours of skin).
The confrontation and work with the various ways of appearance of human moods and emotions is highly fascinating and demanding.
Their understanding supports a better communication among humans and could contribute to a more peaceful and joyful cosmopolitan co-existence, without renouncing the abundance of individual "variations of moods and their colours".
